Observability Digest #0022: Gartner MQ Leaders, AI-Powered Analytics, and Funding Rounds
From Brain Surgery-Like Platforms to Agentic Analytics: Your Weekly Dose of Observability Insights
Positive Monday Vibes
Welcome back ObserCrew,π! Last week, we explored the power of OpenTelemetry and the future of AIOps. This week, from Gartner's latest Magic Quadrant report to Snowflake's shiny new AI-powered analytics tool, there's a lot to unpack, so letβs dive in!
So here's what is coming up π
π Dynatrace, Datadog lead Gartner's Observability Magic Quadrant
π€ Snowflake launches Cortex Analyst for AI-powered analytics
π NICE updates MongoDB management pack for monitoring
πΌ Aditya Jani on why businesses invest in observability
A Week in Observability
and Tech Resilience
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Gartner just dropped their Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms, and it's got some interesting insights. Dynatrace, Datadog, and Splunk are leading the pack, but New Relic and Sumo Logic are making moves too. It's cool to see how the market is evolving and who's innovating.
But what really caught my eye was the emphasis on AI and automation. Gartner says that's gonna be key for future leaders. Makes sense, right? With all the data we're dealing with, we need all the help we can get.
But I'm curious to see how vendors step up and market their AI offerings as I am already confused whose doing and releasing what in the coming year.
WHAT TO WATCH
Snowflake just launched Cortex Analyst, an AI system that's supposed to make data analytics more accurate. It uses "agentic AI" to understand user intent and give better results. Sounds pretty slick, but I wonder how it compares to other AI-powered analytics tools out there.
Could be a game-changer for data-driven observability, though. If it can help us make sense of all our metrics and logs faster and more accurately, that's a win in my book. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
MARKET NEWS
Couple of interesting funding rounds this week:
Definity Data raised $4.5M for its observability and remediation platform. It sounds like they're trying to automate more of the troubleshooting process, which is always good news.
Goodfire scored $7M for its "brain surgery-like" AI observability platform. I love that analogy. It can automatically detect and fix issues in real time, which would be huge if it works as advertised.
LATEST PRODUCT UPDATES
Kubernetes 1.27 is out, and it's got some cool observability enhancements like last phase transition time metrics. Should make it easier to track pod lifecycle events.
NICE released a new MongoDB management pack with better monitoring and diagnostics. Handy if you're running MongoDB at scale.
InfluxData updated their Helm charts for easier InfluxDB clustering. Gotta love anything that simplifies deployment and management.
SECURITY AWARENESS IN OBSERVABILITY
Interesting report from New Relic on how manufacturers are using observability for security, AI, and IoT. It's cool to see observability expanding beyond IT ops and other domains. Security is a big one, for sure. The more visibility we have, the better we can spot and stop threats. And with AI and IoT adding even more data to the mix, observability will only become more critical.

COMMUNITY-DRIVEN ARTICLES
In a previous article on Mastering Observability, I explain the concept of "shift-left observability" and why it matters. The key idea is to integrate observability earlier in the dev process so you can catch issues before they hit production.
As I point out, "The earlier you can identify and fix problems, the less impact they'll have on your users and your business." It's a simple concept but can make a huge difference in the long run.
I also share some tips on how to implement shift-left observability, from instrumenting your code to setting up dev-friendly monitoring tools. EXPERT VOICES
Aditya Jani wrote a great piece on why businesses are investing in observability. He makes the case that in today's complex, cloud-native world, you simply can't afford not to have it.
As he puts it, "Observability allows businesses to understand their systems, identify issues quickly, and resolve them before they impact the end-user experience." I couldnβt agree more. Aditya, a senior software engineer at Zomato, knows how to keep systems running smoothly.
TOOLS FOR TECH LEADERS
Insightful interview with New Relic CEO Bill Staples on their growth in APAC and the future of observability. He talks about how observability is evolving from a nice-to-have to a must-have and how New Relic is innovating to stay ahead of the curve.
I liked his point about observability becoming more proactive and predictive. He says, "The future of observability is about predicting issues before they happen and providing prescriptive guidance on how to fix them." That's the dream, right?
Worth a read for any tech leaders looking to up their observability game.ππ₯

WHATβS ON MY MIND
Before we wrap up, I wanted to mention that Part 4 of my cost series was delayed this week. I simply ran out of time to give it the attention it deserves. But don't worry, I'm looking forward to sharing it with you all on Thursday. Stay tuned for more insights on optimising your observability costs!
