A Week in Observability
and Tech Resilience

THIS WEEKS SPOTLIGHT
The recent announcement of Alibaba, Datadog, and Quesma joining forces on Go compile-time instrumentation marks a significant milestone in the observability landscape. This collaboration addresses a long-standing challenge in the Go ecosystem: the lack of efficient, zero-code instrumentation options.
By leveraging eBPF technology, the new Go Compile-Time Instrumentation SIG aims to provide a unified, vendor-neutral approach to instrumenting Go applications. This initiative has the potential to revolutionize how we monitor and observe Go-based systems, offering improved performance and easier integration with existing observability tools.
The collaboration demonstrates the power of open source in driving innovation and solving complex technical challenges. It's a testament to the industry's commitment to improving observability standards and practices.
OpenTelemetry's blog post provides an in-depth look at this exciting development, highlighting the technical details and potential impact on the Go ecosystem. Explore the collaboration details (7 mins)

WHAT TO WATCH
OpenLIT has released version 2.0 of its open-source AI engineering platform, bringing significant enhancements to our space. The new version includes OpenTelemetry-native observability for GenAI stacks, secure API key handling, and protection against prompt injection. Iβll be keeping any eye on this as while these features sound promising, we'll need to evaluate its real-world performance and potential overheads.
I do however appreciate OpenLIT's focus on LLM experimentation and pushing the growing trend of AI integration in our observability tools. Could this release potentially streamline workflows and improve security in AI applications lets keep and eye and see. Check out OpenLIT 2.0 (5 mins)
CubeFS, a distributed storage platform, has graduated from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) incubation program. This milestone highlights the increasing demand for scalable observability storage solutions in cloud-native environments. With a 1,900% growth in adoption and managing 350 petabytes across 200+ organisations, CubeFS demonstrates the evolution of our modern Observability needs.
As we generate more telemetry data, I see solutions like CubeFS will play a crucial role in helping us managing and analyse our information efficiently. Learn about CubeFS graduation (4 mins)
MARKET NEWS
Datadog's stock continues to show strong momentum in the observability space, with analysts projecting a 45% upside potential from its current $141 price point. The company's recent launch of its LLM tool and consistent earnings demonstrate (to me anyway) that we paying too much for this service and that growing demand for AI-enhanced monitoring solutions is driving the market. CodeCraft: Elevate Your Observability Skills
In this section, we've curated expert coding tips and insights to boost your observability prowess:
Zudonu's collection of monitoring scripts offers some solid bash work for day-to-day operations. The disk space monitor script, in particular, stands out as a useful tool for detecting "/var/log eating all the space" scenarios. While we often rely on more sophisticated tools, these scripts serve as a reminder of the importance of understanding fundamental monitoring techniques. The threshold-based approach is clean, though adding metrics export for trending could enhance its utility. Explore monitoring scripts (10 mins)
Theo Gravity's LogLayer presents a fresh take on structured logging for JavaScript. The clean builder pattern approach and type-safe context handling address common pain points when tracing issues across microservices. This library could be particularly useful for improving observability in complex JavaScript and TypeScript applications. Discover LogLayer (7 mins)
